There’s something deeply comforting about pulling a cast iron skillet of golden, flaky biscuits out of the oven. It’s more than just a side for supper—it’s a symbol of Southern tradition, hospitality, and gathering around the table.
In our homestead kitchen, biscuits are a regular appearance, whether we’re pairing them with sausage gravy, slathering them with jam, or simply enjoying them warm with a pat of butter.
These buttermilk biscuits are simple, humble, and made with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. No shortcuts here—just real food, real flavor, and that unbeatable homemade texture.
If you’ve never made biscuits from scratch before, don’t worry. This recipe is beginner-friendly and forgiving. And if you have made them? We think this one’s going to earn a permanent place in your kitchen notebook.
Ingredients:
Homemade All-Purpose Biscuit Mix
6 c. all-purpose flour (can substitute with measure for measure Gluten Free Flour)
¼ c. granulated sugar
2 T. baking powder
1 T. baking soda
1 ½ tsp. salt
Sift together all the ingredients in a large bowl and store in an airtight container.
Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits
2 2/3 c. Homemade All-Purpose Biscuit Mix
5 T. cold butter, cut into cubes or grated
½ - ¾ c. Buttermilk
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Cut butter into the Homemade All-Purpose Biscuit Mix using a pastry blender. Add ½ to ¾ cup Buttermilk, ¼ cup at a time until you reach a sticky consistency.
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead 3 to 4 times to bring it together, then pat into a rectangle about ¾ inch thick.
Fold the dough in half, then pat it out again. Do this 2-3 times for extra flaky layers.
Cut biscuits with a floured round cutter (or mason jar), place in a greased cast iron skillet so they’re just barely touching.
Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Brush tops with melted butter, if desired.

Tips from the Homestead:
Use frozen butter and grate it with a cheese grater for extra fluff.
Don’t overwork the dough – it keeps them tender.
Want to add herbs, cheddar, or a sprinkle of cracked pepper? Go for it!
Gluten Free All Purpose, Measure for Measure flour can be substituted in this recipe
